Volkshaus (Rebgasse 12-14, 4058 Basel) – this place is a combination of a restaurant, a beer garden, a bar, and an events venue. With upscale touches, this restaurant serves various Swiss dishes with French and Germanic influences, such as Wienerschnitzel breaded in almonds with cucumber salad; whole sole with nutty butter, leaf spinach and rice; rack of lamb on ratatouille and potato gnocchi; and herbal crêpes filled with wild mushrooms. Desserts merit a mention thanks to creative flourishes with crème brulées, as does the cheese selection. During the warmer months, the courtyard beer garden comes to life.
